We help organisations look after the personal safety and mental well being of their staff

Why are we so passionate about Personal Safety and Mental Wellbeing?

Simple really...our health and the way we feel has a huge impact on the way we behave, the decisions we make and our productivity.

We believe that looking after both the personal safety AND mental wellbeing of employees benefits both.

Meet The Team...

Terry Streather

Director and Head of Training

We founded Oakwood Training in 2012 to help clients focus on both the personal safety and positive mental health of their staff as proactive, rather than reactive areas of business.

Historically Personal Safety and Mental Wellbeing have been thought of as totally separate, but I believe they are fundamentally linked. The way we think and feel has a huge impact on the way we behave, the decisions we make and how we perform at work.

I'm passionate about helping organisations create a safer and healthier workplace. Not only because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes good business sense. Happy, safe employees make better employees.

I am a Mental Health First Aid Instructor and Advanced Physical Intervention and Breakaway Instructor with 15 years frontline experience. When I'm not teaching or developing courses, I'm being chased around by my 7 and 4 year olds, and mostly doing everything Gemma tells me to.

Gemma Streather

Director and Head of Everything Else!

I ensure all our clients receive the highest quality of service. I understand how important it is to have a friendly voice on the end of the phone and enjoy supporting our clients from initial contact through to post course information, feedback and certification.

I have over 15 years experience managing service delivery within the public and private sectors and believe that excellent service should be expected as standard.

I'm a keen (and slightly competitive) Saturday morning Park Runner, and I am arranging for an Oakwood team to take part in a "tough mudder" type event, (or maybe one similar without all the mud!)

Lee Westbury

Personal Safety Lead Trainer

I have been teaching Conflict Management and Personal Safety skills for over 24 years and joined Oakwood in 2014. I’m a retired Police Sergeant with 30 years service, where dealing with conflict and behaviours that challenge was part of my daily role.

I understand that just because behaviour may look like aggression it does not mean that it is. I enjoy showing people how to reduce, minimise and manage risks to their personal safety in a wide variety of potentially difficult situations.

I’m a real coffee fan (which at times puts me in conflict with Terry who only drink decaf caramel lattes!)

Rob Chamberlain

Personal Safety Lead Trainer

I enjoy helping people learn effective communication skills and de-escalation techniques, enabling them to feel safer if faced with incidents of aggression or violence whilst at work.

I have taught Personal Safety and De-escalation skills for over 8 years and joined Oakwood in 2015.

I have worked with Housing Officers, Social Workers, Teachers, Police Officers and Healthcare professionals to name a few sectors.

I’m training for my first IronMan in 2017, and trying to get the other trainers to the "Metafit" classes I run. So far, no joy.

Andy Flockton

Mental Health Lead Trainer

I have worked in the Mental Health field for close to 30 years, most of that time in the NHS as an Occupational Therapist, a Family Therapist and Transformation Manager across a whole range of services from young people to older adults. I joined Oakwood in 2017.

I am on the National Training Team for Mental Health First Aid England and approved to deliver all of their products. I enjoy raising awareness about Mental Health and helping make a real difference to people’s lives.

I'm a keen adventure racer and on a weekend you will often find me navigating on foot and mountain bike (usually lost) in some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK.

Pete Bumpuss

Mental Health Lead Trainer

Over the past 20 years I have developed a real passion for Mental Health, writing Mental Health Policies and Procedures for public sector organisations. I joined Oakwood in 2016.

I am a Mental Health First Aid instructor and love teaching people from a wide range of backgrounds.

I want to help remove the stigma and taboo of Mental Health by giving people the confidence to talk about it, know what to look for and most importantly, what to do about it if they see it so they can support others who may be experiencing mental ill health.

As a former landscaper and builder, I’m usually helping family and friends with their garden projects when I'm not teaching. Mates rates of course!

Mairead Turner

Mental Health Trainer

Before joining Oakwood in 2017 I was a Local Authority trainer for over 5 years, delivering Mental Health First Aid courses across a wide Multi-Agency Platform.

As part of the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Mental Heath Partnership I enjoyed training a large number of Mental Health First Aiders.

I am passionate about breaking down the stigma around mental ill health and making it part of our everyday conversation.

I’m a mum of 2 - one all grown up and one a ‘new’ teenager. When I’m not in a training room, I can usually be found up-cycling furniture (the love is there, the skill is yet to develop!), baking or standing in a muddy field holding four dog leads.

Chris Burnard

Personal Safety Trainer

I recently retired from the Police after a very exciting 30 year career as an Operational Firearms Commander, Firearms Tactical Advisor and Weapons Training Instructor.

I had the privilege of completing the firearms operational order and tactical plan for the Olympic games when Team GB and Team Japan used Loughborough University as a training venue. I have also been involved in the planning of Royalty and other VIP protection operations.

I have been teaching conflict management and personal safety skills for 13 years and joined Oakwood in 2016.

I’m a keen photographer and am looking forward to catching a great shot of Gemma with a face full of mud! One for the album...

Ian Bradbury

Personal Safety Trainer

I have been a Personal Safety and De-escalation skills trainer for 18 years and joined Oakwood in 2017. I am an experienced expert witness in the area of Personal Safety.

I really enjoy helping people get the ‘lightbulb moment’…when everything clicks into place and they understand what reasonable force really is, or how to safely breakaway from an aggressor.

I am a Metafit instructor (and general fitness fanatic) and have just started a coaching role at my local Youth Rugby club.
