It seems that almost every other week another story hits the news about a knife related incident or death, and it is often reported that we live in a “knife culture”.
Would you know what to do if you were ever confronted by a person armed with a knife?
We believe that awareness and avoidance is the most effective form of defence.
Our training is delivered by qualified personal safety specialists with years of experience as both front line practitioners and trainers. We understand the reality of knife crime, and know this is not a subject to be glamourised or treated lightly.
Conflict involving knives and edged weapons never happens like it does in the movies or in a controlled environment like a martial arts dojo or training hall.
THIS IS NOT A KNIFE FIGHTING COURSE
The heavy focus of this course is to avoid conflict with anyone armed with an edged weapon. Physical skills are only considered as an absolute last resort and are deliberately simple and effective.
All of our courses can be tailored to your specific requirements, at no additional cost, and here are some of our course objectives:
Raising awareness and offering practical safety tips
Recognising and dealing with conflict effectively
What to look for and what to do to help
Like all of our courses, our Knife and Edged Weapon Awareness course was developed in direct response to the needs of our clients. We are very proud of the amazing feedback we have received
I was impressed from the onset. Terry took the time to come and find out our requirements, was clear in what would be delivered meeting the needs of the staff. The training itself was excellent and I would highly recommend it. Trainers are very experienced, knowledgeable and personable
We have worked with Oakwood Training for the past four years. Terry’s knowledge has been invaluable in designing courses and operational procedures that help us reduce risks to our staff. I consistently hear great comments from staff who have attended courses and I enjoy working with Terry on the different approaches we need for our diverse range of services.
Check out "Our Clients" page to see what they have said about us.
We know that you and your staff will love this course. Remember, we can alter any content to suit your specific needs to ensure you get the most out of your training. If, for whatever reason, you are unhappy with the course, we will give you a full refund.
Breakaway or Disengagement skills are physical techniques to get you away from any potentially hostile/aggressive encounter. It's not fancy martial arts and you don't need to be a ninja (although, please tell us if you are!)
The techniques are designed to be easy to use and recall should you ever need them. They have also been thoroughly medically reviewed and risk assessed so you can be sure we have your safety as a priority.
Running miles a week and hitting the gym every day is not a requirement of this course! If you currently struggling with an illness or carrying an injury that you're worried about, get in touch and let us know. We will make sure you are looked after.
Well, that depends on the content decided by the people who commissioned the course, which will be based on a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risk you may encounter in your work.
As a guide however, we spend on average 30-40 minutes on our physical techniques. The focus of the course is on preventing the need for any physical response, by recognising the early signs and doing something about it before it gets to that point.
A stitch in time...
No. Nothing is mandatory (unless your employer says otherwise). We do, on occasion, have people who do not take part in the physical for a wide variety of reasons. They are still able to learn through observation and we are sure you will take something away from this small part of the course.
No. not sure I need to explain this one...
We only ask you to complete a medical questionnaire on the day if the course involves physical skills (eg..breakaway).
This lets us know if you have any pre-existing medical conditions or injuries. We retain this information in the strictest of confidence and do not share it.
Absolutely. We don't believe in a "one size fits all" approach. We involve you in course design from the outset, and even include policy and guidance specific to your department. We want your event to do what you need it to do. And best of all...it doesn't cost you any more.
Of course. We would obviously advise you not to take an active role in the physical elements. After all there are two (maybe more) of you to consider!
Comfortable clothing which allows free movement is a must. Long bottoms and closed flat shoes are great. No need for a trip to sports shop though.
