What to look for and what to do to help
Our Positive Handling for Teachers Trainer Course was developed to give trainers within the education sector more freedom. We are very proud of the amazing feedback we have received and I hope you will take a minute to check out "Our Clients" page to see what they have said about us.
Education Training Manager: Catch 22
Project Co-ordinator: Catch 22
As a geographically dispersed group of Alternative Provision schools, Oakwood provided the solution to a consistent approach to the safe and positive handling of students. Our staff now have the confidence to deliver training in house in order to keep staff and students safe across our schools
The BTEC Level 2 Award in Disengagement and Physical Intervention was both informative and fun to do. I found the legislation section really useful, which in turn has given me the confidence to make those all important decisions around using force. The trainers were confident and very experienced and the course paperwork was easy to follow and complete.

We know that you and your staff will love this course. Remember, we can alter any content to suit your specific needs to ensure you get the most out of your training. If, for whatever reason, you are unhappy with the course, we will give you a full refund..
Breakaway or Disengagement skills are physical techniques to get you away from any potentially hostile/aggressive encounter. It's not fancy martial arts and you don't need to be a ninja (although, please tell us if you are!)
The techniques are designed to be easy to use and recall should you ever need them. They have also been thoroughly medically reviewed and risk assessed so you can be sure we have your safety as a priority.
Running miles a week and hitting the gym every day is not a requirement of this course! If you currently struggling with an illness or carrying an injury that you're worried about, get in touch and let us know. We will make sure you are looked after.
We ask you to complete a medical questionnaire on the day before you take part in any physical skills (eg..breakaway).
This enables you to let the trainers know if you have any pre-existing medical conditions or injuries. We do, on occasion, have people who do not take part in the physical skills for a wide variety of reasons.
They are still able to learn through observation and we are sure you will take something away from this small part of the course.
Well, that depends on the content decided by the people who commissioned the course, which will be based on a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risk you may encounter in your work.
As a guide however, we spend on average 30-40 minutes on our physical techniques. The focus of the course is on preventing the need for any physical response, by recognising the early signs and doing something about it before it gets to that point.
A stitch in time...
Absolutely. We don't believe in a "one size fits all" approach. We involve you in course design from the outset, and even include policy and guidance specific to your department. We want your event to do what you need it to do. And best of all...it doesn't cost you any more.
Comfortable clothing which allows free movement is a must. Long bottoms and closed flat shoes are great. No need for a trip to sports shop though.
On successful completion of the course you will receive a BTEC Level 2 in Disengagement and Non-Restrictive Physical Intervention.
You also receive a Positive Handling Trainer Certificate, through Oakwood Training (very much sought after I think you'll find...).
On becoming a licensed centre, you will be able to deliver BTEC Level 2 award courses in Disengagement and Non-Restrictive Physical Intervention within your own School or Academy to other teaching and non-teaching staff at the discretion of the head-teacher.
You will be able to deliver complete courses or in modular sessions as and when you need them, without restriction.
On completion of the course you will receive access to free access online resources.
We will provide you with all materials required to deliver the course including, Risk Assessments; Lesson Plans; Safety Briefs and Safe Systems of work to follow to ensure the safe running of courses.
