Positive Handling in Social Care

This course is specifically designed for professionals working with vulnerable adults or children who may display behaviour that challenges, aggression or violence

We believe that care should be person centred and a positive behaviour support approach is the foundation of all our courses.

We understand that behaviour (whether challenging or not) is a form of communication and can often express an individual’s unmet need. As an absolute last resort however it may be necessary to use physical methods to prevent harm.

So, what's in the course?

Our 1 day Positive Handling course has been fully risk assessed to comply with the latest legislation and guidance in this field. It includes medically reviewed techniques that are simple to learn and use.

As an absolute last resort we teach simple but effective methods of disengagement and “least restrictive” physical intervention within a competent legal framework.

All our courses can be tailored to your specific requirements, at no additional cost.

Here are the learning objectives:

  • Know what is meant by the term "Challenging Behaviour"
  • Understand how setting and conditions can impact on a person's behaviour
  • How an understanding of Verbal and Non verbal communication can keep us safer
  • Diffusion and De-escalation techniques
  • The law and guidance around using force (setting specific)
  • Understanding the Crisis Cycle
  • Simple but effective Breakaway/ Disengagement techniques
  • Understand the risks of restraint (incl positional asphyxia)
  • Understand the difference between "escorting", "holding and "restraining"
  • How to apply and de-escalate simple and effective non/least-restrictive Positive Handling techniques

The Positive Handling Course delivered by Oakwood Training was a fantastic course with a good flow to the 3 days. It was all interesting with a good mixture of theory and practical. The course exceeded my expectations and the trainer’s knowledge was excellent.
